Khayelitsha N2 Service Delivery Protest 01 June 2010 – 02 June 2010

The N2 at Mew Way was the site of service delivery protests that followed the City of Cape Town’s removal of 65 toilets in the Makhaza informal settlement.

Residents burnt tyres on top of a footbridge under the R300 on the Mew Way off-ramp off the N2 highway and placed concrete slabs on the the N2 highway towards Cape Town.

The protest follows demonstrations in Khayelitsha on Monday, after the City of Cape Town removed the 65 toilets that had stood in the open, without walls, as a result of the actions of the DA-led City Council.

The SA Human Rights Commission, following an investigation, found that the  City had violated the community’s right to dignity by not enclosing the walls of the toilets.
