Constitution Hill: A symbol of democracy – 28 May 2009
This extraordinary landmark encapsulates South Africa’s past, present and future. The national heritage site reflects the history of the nation. Rebellious British soldiers who fought with the Boers at the turn of the century were jailed in the Old Fort Prison; and so were youths taking part in the Soweto uprising. Now it is home to our Constitutional Court, the bastion of South Africa’s democracy. This place, once a symbol of oppression and fear, is now testament to South Africa’s freedom.
