Archbishop Tutu throws weight behind 1 GOAL, Madiba legacy handprint campaign – 16 July 2010

Archbishop Desmond Tutu had a busy day. Firstly, he posed wearing the 1Goal t-shirt, and next, he lent his hands to the City of Cape Town’s famous handrprints project.

Archbishop Tutu is co-chair of 1Goal – Education for All, along with Sepp Blatter and Queen Rania. Today, 72 million children do not go to school as a result of extreme poverty. 1GOAL is a campaign that has seized the power of football to ensure that education for all is a lasting impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He says: “Education is the engine through which development can be powered, both for the individual in opening up new opportunities as well as for countries seeking to move out of the fierce grip of poverty. This year’s World Cup in South Africa provides a platform to deliver a lasting legacy that will last for generations.”

Archbishop Tutu then ‘donated’ his painted handprints to the City’s famous handprints legacy project that honours former President Mandela and symbolises Cape Town’s commitment to his principle of making peace. The completed canvas will have 67 handprints from people such as Prince Albert, Premier Helen Zille, Mayor Dan Plato, FW de Klerk, London mayor Boris Johnson and US football star, Reggie Bush. Ultimately, the canvas will be auctioned to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
