A Place under the Sun…
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, patron of the Sunflower Fund, sports the first of the 2009 sunflower bandanas that go on sale during the month of September to support annual Bandana Day that takes place on October 14. He encouraged his entire staff to go to Pick n Pay, which stocks the bandanas for the month in support of the fundraising effort, to buy bandanas.
The bandanas were designed by 21-year-old Khosi Khumalo from the Tshwane University of Technology in Gauteng, who used the concept of a ‘circle of life’ enclosing the sunflower motif. She said her inspiration was the meaning behind what circles represent. “To me circles represent infinity – no beginning and no end and circles as a group represent unity of people. Therefore, the design is relaying that we as people should stand together united in this fight for better health, the fight for better health should be the common goal that unites us all, which is why the Sunflower is placed in the middle of the circles. Together we can make a difference by ‘sharing a little to save a life’.”
The Sunflower Fund aims to educate, and to recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders. It strives to maintain the associated donor records of the South African Bone Marrow Registry.
