VICTOR VERSTER PRISON GEARS UP FOR 20 YEAR CELEBRATIONS SINCE MADIBA’S RELEASE: The Nelson Mandela Museum, with sites in Qunu and Mthatha, houses much of the Mandela legacy – at his request. This week, in honour of the 20th anniversary of his release, and the 10th birthday of the Nelson Mandela Museum, the Museum and Oryx Media have created two satellite exhibitions as part of its outreach programme. The exhibition – called 20 Years of Freedom, A Lifetime of Service – is being showcased outside the Prison and for the opening of parliament on Thursday, 11 February.
Khwezi ka Mpumlwana, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Museum says: “This exhibition will bring the Mandela legacy from the place of his birth and upbringing to the Victor Verster Prison where he spent his last days of incarceration. For the Nelson Mandela Museum, 2010 has enormous significance as it celebrates 20 years of freedom, and 10 years since the Museum, created in his honour, opened its doors. The museum has created this exhibition to mark this special occasion and to celebrate this legend’s life.”
