ANC stalwart and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Mandela often referred to as Madiba, his clan name, was imprisoned by the then South African government for 27 years. After his release he became South Africa’s first democratically elected President and held office from 1994 – 1999. Since stepping down, Nobel laurate Mandela continues to advocate peace and civil rights on a global scale. Widely regarded as a man of great integrity and an elder statesman, he uses his influence to raise funds and awareness of human rights issues.
