The Eastern Cape’s magnificent snowy mountains
Icy weather and snow in the Eastern Cape turned the province’s mountains into a beautiful – but deadly – snowscape. Eskom cables were uprooted from the ground, trees were uprooted and around ten cars and 100 homes were damaged during recent heavy snow storms. Numerous roads and passes around the Eastern Cape were closed due to snow and ice on the roads.
Daylight revealed the region’s true beauty as snow atop the peaks stretched as far as the eye can see. Day time temperatures hovered around 10 degrees Celsius. Night time temperatures drop to between -3 degrees celsius and all the way down to a freezing -27 degrees celsius during blizzards on the very high ground, such as the Ben McDhui mountain peak at 2720 metres.
