SANDF celebrates 10th anniversary of South African peacekeeping in Africa – 17 October 2009

FORCE FOR PEACE: South Africa marked the 10th anniversary as a peacekeeping force in Africa with a South African National Defence Force parade through the streets of Bloemfontein, a fly-past by military aircraft, and an address by Commander in Chief, President Jacob Zuma, on 16 October 2009. The President, accompanied by Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, and generals, conducted a symbolic wreath laying ceremony, and presented Decorations and Medals.

President Zuma said: “The SANDF has placed South Africa amongst the world’s largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations and South Africa is now regarded by the international community as an honest and reliable peace broker… Our country can not survive in isolation, as its economic development and security is linked to the continent’s stability… When it brings about peace in the continent, our defence force creates an environment that is conducive for reconstruction and development in our region, and possibilities of faster economic development.”
