Ghana becomes first African country to win at 2010 World Cup – 13 June 2010
Ghana became the first team from the African continent to win a Fifa 2010 World Cup game, beating Serbia 1-0 in Pretoria. Asamoah Gyan of the so-called Black Stars scored from the penalty spot after Zdravko Kuzmanovic’s handball inside the box, sending the stadium into vuvuzela and drum-driven delirium. It was an African celebration, with the flags of South Africa, Nigeria and other African nations to the fore at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The match-up was Ghana’s first in the competition. Said Gyan afterwards: “This was for our family here and our family back home. Not only Ghana, but the whole of Africa, is happy for what we’ve done here today.” Ghana face Australia and Germany on June 19 and 23.
