First South African developed HIV vaccines begin testing in Crossroads, Cape
 Town

The South African Aids Vaccine Initiative (SAAVI) is a lead programme of the Medical Research Council (MRC) and is supported by the South African government. The SAAVI announced the start of the phase one safety trial at the Emavundleli Prevention Centre in Crossroads, Cape Town.

South Africa has 36 participants from the Western Cape and Gauteng while the USA has already conducted trials on 12 participants.

Professor Anna-Lise Williamson, leader of the vaccine development team had this to say: “ An effective vaccine against HIV/ Aids remains a top global health priority and it is our hope that the evaluation of these vaccines in clinical trials will provide some important answers that will bring us closer towards this goal.”
