ANCWL marks women’s month with march and rally
On the 7th August 2009, the ANC Women’s League commemorated the 53rd anniversary of the historic women’s march to the Union Buildings in 1956 by staging a demonstration to call for change in the treatment of women and children in the Western Cape and in South Africa in general. The demonstration marked the beginning of their planned activities for Women’s Month. The demonstrators gathered at Kaizergracht and marched down to the Provincial Legislature where the League’s provincial chairperson, Nonzaliseko Makanda, handed over the memorandum to a representative from the Department of Community Safety calling for more safe houses and more visible policing in high risk areas.
