Quest for truth continues
FORTY-ONE years ago, this week, a young teacher from Roodepoort was being tortured by security police in Johannesburg. The torture went on and on. The bruises and welts that covered his body spoke of the unspeakable pain he endured. On the fifth day, he died after falling from the 10th Floor of John Vorster Square police station. An inquest found that he committed suicide.
Eighteen years ago South Africa celebrated its democracy. The teacher’s family hoped for justice, but none has been forthcoming with respect to his case. Security police records remain classified. The democratic South Africa is effectively asking the teacher’s family to accept the outcome of the apartheid regime’s inquest as the last word on the matter.
